If you follow me as ontheplinth on Twitter I just archived the account. It was set up specifically for my One & Other hour on the plinth in Trafalgar Square.

Mac a Hash – How to get the hash key on Mac OS X
Jul 23rd, 2009 by David

Apple Mac computers have a few quirks, one of the more annoying ones is the absence of a hash # key on the standard British keyboard. Hash does exists but you have to play a two finger chord on the keyboard to get to it. ALT and 3.

This really p*ss*s me off as a lot of programming requires the # all the time.

When I bought my new MacBook Pro I decided to fix the problem and wrote a new keymap for it. I have taken the § key, top left of the keyboard and remapped it to give me a #.

Instructions:

Download this file: piper.keylayout RIGHT click it and select save…

Open Finder and navigate to:

Macintosh HD/Library/Keyboard layout/

Put the Piper file in here.

Open System Preferences, go to International. Select the Input Tab. Find the Piper file in the list of Languages and select it. At the bottom of the page check the ‘Show input menu in menu bar’.

Shut System Preferences. On the Menu bar click the British Flag. Check the Piper option. # should now be on the § key and vice versa.

Simple!

UPDATE: I had a request for a keyboard layout that puts a € Euro symbol on the § button so here you are:

Download this file: euro.keylayout RIGHT click it and select save…

UPDATE: The Mac Geeb Gab have linked here so if you are after creating your own keymap use the Ukelele application linked to here.

New ‘puter

While I was in London, being a Work of Art, I took time out from my cultural duties to stroll along Regent Street. What a surprise, an Apple Mac emporium exists there…

So I bought myself an Apple MacBook Pro.

It’s VERY nice, in an understated and subtle sort of way.

Various Mac stuff up for sale on eBay.

Mac Mini
Logitech wireless keyboard and Mouse set

But is it art?
Jul 23rd, 2009 by David

“Probably not” is the short answer.

The long answer:-

I think we can divide my time on the plinth into four areas.

Area 1: Technical. Did it work? I was attempting to interact with the online community on Twitter and Skype, using the live feed from Sky Arts. Technically it worked perfectly. Let’s give that 10/10.

Area 2: Viewer experience. Did the crowd like it? I had dozens of very complimentary comments on Twitter and Skype. Only a couple of negative views. So it looks like the punters liked it. The One & Other team were very complimentary as well but I am not sure that that was a totally honest opinion. Are they really going to say “That sucked dude” when the cherry picked me off the plinth? Let’s give that 8/10.

Area 3: Did the Plinther have a good time? Too f*ck*ng right I did, most fun I have had in London ever. Let’s give that 100/10.

Area 4: Was it Art? No I don’t think so. Not even slightly. just a bloke with a laptop on the phone. Let’s give that 1/10.

So all in all a neutral Plinthing I think.

With hindsight would I have done it differently? Yes. Either Skype OR Twitter, not both. I should have set up the Skype calls in advance and just talked to a few people who had something interesting to say. Twitter would have been easier to manage. The Skype went bonkers with 50+ callers at once and an equal number of chats. I was swamped.

What this does show is that Twitter is a powerful tool for promotion and worthy of inclusion for anyone in the promotion business. You want people at your event? Twitter about it.

It also shows how useful Skype is. I had calls from USA, Switzerland, Isle of Man and London. If I had put my mobile phone number up (that was the back up plan) I doubt I would have had international calls.

If anyone is thinking of trying this again then go for it. Useful features would be: auto sig on Twitter with the hashtags. I forgot to include them until I was reminded. Route Skype calls to a 3rd party then get them transferred to you. It’s cheating a bit but makes life easier.

And just in case you were wondering about the technical details:-

Apple Macbook.
Internet from 3 on a USB dongle.
Amplified speakers powered off the USB 5 volts.
Dialog+ Skype Phone.
Tweetie
Audio controlled with Audio Hijack Pro. Slightly over driven with a bit of reverb to add a bit of punch. Skype output to the external speaker, input to Skype from the phone’s microphone. Skype had the ringing sound set to null.
The Mac had the screen resolution turned down, the mouse pointer made bigger, and the contrast turned up so that it was visible in full daylight.

Table from Robert Dyas, £14.95. Chair for £9.99. Ikea Brolly. Loony Tunes Tie. Marks and Spencer pinstripe suit. And my shoes were clean and polished! A Twitter comment claimed I had dirty shoes. Cheek!

I am blogging
Jul 23rd, 2009 by David

Well of course I am, here it is, you’re reading it.

Until now this blog was just for me, if anyone read it that was a bonus. This is my test space on the web, here I develop ideas and test them for the other websites I operate. If you are wondering….

Rolvenden Cat Rescue

Naturist Life Magazine

Spielplatz Naturist Club

Yes the last two are nudist sites, but don’t get too excited. Right now this site is running on Drupal. I have plans to move the Naturist Life Magazine over to Drupal in the autumn, so here I am learning Drupal. A few months ago it was WordPress, and so on.

Where was I, oh yes, my blog was basically hidden. I did not tell anyone I had one, I didn’t publicise it. Until now. With my upcoming time on the Fourth Plinth I have become an attention seeking media whore telling anyone and everyone who will listen that I AM ON THE FOUTH PLINTH IN TRAFALGAR SQUARE ON 15 JULY AT 8 AM.

The upside of telling everyone is that a few of my friends have started reading my posts, and commenting on them when they see me. My friend John (*waves at John*) asked how the rehearsals for the plinth were coming along. It was at that moment it hit me. It’s public. IT’S VERY PUBLIC.

F*CK! I don’t really do public. Too late now.

Did I mention 4th Plinth Trafalgar Square 15 July 8AM?

Shameless self promotion
